Concerned about the 55 gallon per day requirement ?

There has been a lot of buzz in social media lately stating that water users in California will soon be limited to using only 55 gallons of water per person per day. While it is true that Governor Jerry Brown in May 2018 signed into law two bills that set new water use targets, what isn't true is that the legislation requires that each individual water user be monitored and restricted to the 55 gallons per person per day.

Senate Bill 606 (Hertzberg) and Assembly Bill 1668 (Friedman) will require urban water providers throughout California to set new permanent water use targets for their respective service areas by 2022. This means that water providers like San Juan Water District will need to utilize the methodologies being developed by the CA Department of Water Resources to create an aggregate water budget for itself - not for each respective customer. This water budget will include residential customer use, commercial customer use, and water loss limitations within our own service area boundaries.

We are working with the State on their implementation plan with the ultimate goal of minimizing any impact to our customers.
